Review: MAC Prep+Prime Highlighter pen!

Some time ago I went to MAC counter looking for a new under eye concealer. The makeup artist highly recommended me something that I wouldn't have chosen all by myself. It's the Prep+Prime Highlighter Pen in shade Radiant Rose. The makeup artist at the counter recommended it over Select Cover Up concealer, which I first thought was very odd but when I swatched the pen on the back of my hand I found it to be quite pigmented and nice.

Very nice and sleek container, it's black with tiny shimmers. It's one of those twist tubes that highlighter pens usually are.

The lightest color available is Radiant Rose. It has a pink tone to it so it's a great color for under the eyes. I haven't used this anywhere else on my face because of the pink tone, I have neutral fair complexion and pink just does not look good. But applied over my really nice and dark circles (yes, my ex-roommate called me Panda) Radiant Rose works just fine!

The applicator is nice and soft but it's not the most hygienic way to apply makeup, I must say. With the twist end you can get the product out and with one or two twists you get a small amount so it won't go to waste.

Once applied the product dries pretty fast and changes color to a bit more darker than it first seems like. Here's when the pink tone turns up. I like that it dries so nicely so if you don't want to, you don't have to use powder over it. Of course it will last longer if you do but sometimes powdering under the eyes makes me look so wrinkly. The pigmentation is ok, it definitely hides my dark circles nicely. Must be something to do with the pink tone and the light reflecting powers this Prep+Prime pen has. Just great!

Here's the INCI for those who are interested.

I tried to capture the real pigmentation and color in the swatch pictures but I did not do a very good job. As a matter of fact the pictures are quite bad. I'm sorry. I highly recommend to swatch this product before buying because it changes color a little after application.

The verdict then? I like the pen's ability to hide my under eye circles, that's for sure. I like that it's easy to use and it dries pretty nicely and quick so you don't have to powder over it if you don't want to. But the container only has about 3 ml of product which is ridiculously little for a concealer! And the thing is that this isn't really a concealer dispite the fact that it was sold to me as a concealer. It's a highlighter and for that 3,6 ml / 0,12 fl oz is...well, it's not that much eather. So my point is that for 23€ I want more product than what I get now with this pen. I'm sorry MAC, a great product but just too expensive! Put this stuff in a tube container and you have yourself a winner.

Thanks for reading!
